Ensemble Studios has done a stunning job
with Age of Kings. They have made substantial improvements over the
original which make AOK a great one of a kind game. For starters it
seems to have very few if any major bugs or things that could have
been improved on.
The immersion is great,
with the fish jumping out of the water, the birds chirping. The
visuals and sounds are great, the music is well compiled and is also
intriguing. Each unit and building is detailed down to the pixel,
the tree's and textures used on the land are also wonderful. The
sounds and order sounds are also unique to each race and are given
in that races natural voice.
The actual game play though is where AOK
really shines, for starters there are 13 races each with various
units. Some units the same for every race. But the units and
buildings all look different for each race. Even though they do the
same things. The combat options are a dream. You can setup groups
and when using formations you can get your units to do what you want
them to do. In line formation the siege weapons go at the back and
the hand to hand combatants at the front and the archers in the
middle. Box lets you encapsulate venerable units in the middle.
Flank lets you attack the enemy from its 2 flanks and sagged lets
you spread out your men to avoid being shelled to death by
artillery.
To win players can do 1 of
several things, the most aggressive killing all the enemy players.
The least aggressive building a wonder or collecting all the relics.
With 4 resources there is alot of resource management and also
difficulty when natural resources run out. But you can still trade
for more resources either with other players, allies or the market.
The skirmishes you have will also be great as you can play upto 8
players over LAN or on the Zone. Those 8 players can be any
combination of Human or AI players also.
