1.1.4 Upgrade
NOTE: Please
do NOT install
this update if you have the Balance of Power Expansion pack already
installed on your system. Balance of Power Expansion
already contains these updates.
Installation: To install the upgrade,
you must have the original version of the game already installed on
your system and you must run the XvT_3Dfx.exe program that you have
downloaded or copied to your system. The setup program should
automatically locate where X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is already
installed and replace a few of the files from the original version
of the game. You can verify that the upgrade is properly installed
by starting the game and looking for the version text in the lower
right hand corner of the data pad. It should say "v.1.1".
Corrects:
The X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter Version 1.1.4 Update includes all
fixes and enhancements from previous updates (v1.0, v1.10, and
3Dfx). To install the upgrade, you must have the original version
of the game already installed on your system and you must run the
XvT_3Dfx.exe program that you have downloaded or copied to your
system. The setup program should automatically locate where X-Wing
vs. TIE Fighter is already installed and replace a few of the
files from the original version of the game. You can verify that
the upgrade is properly installed by starting the game and looking
for the version text in the lower right hand corner of the data
pad. It should say "v.1.1".
One of the most important things to know about this version of
X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is that for multiplayer play this upgraded
version is NOT compatible with earlier versions of the game. All
players must be running the same version of the game. The game
will not allow players to join a multiplayer game if they are
running a different version than the host.
While for multiplayer play the game versions are incompatible,
the pilot files are fully compatible. Therefore, you may continue
to use your pilots from the original version.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS TO USE THE 3Dfx UPGRADE INCLUDED IN
THE 1.1.4 UPGRADE:
3DFX Chipset Required. Video cards currently using the 3Dfx
chipset: Orchid Righteous 3D, Diamond Monster 3D, RealVision Flash
3D, Hercules Stingray 128/3D.
NOTE: The X-WING vs. TIE FIGHTER 3DFX Upgrade
has been tested extensively on cards with the 3Dfx Voodoo and
Voodoo Rush chipsets. Other 3D chipsets have not been fully
tested, so we cannot guarantee their compatibility, nor will
LucasArts provide technical support for 3D cards which do not have
the 3Dfx Voodoo or Voodoo Rush chipsets.
This version of of the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter 3Dfx Upgrade
fixes the following known problems:
- DIRECTPLAY SERVICE PROVIDER: Fixes a bug which could cause
the game to fail to select the correct DirectPlay service
provider, which might prevent a player from being able to host
or join a multi-player game.
- GRAPHIC CORRUPTION ON AMD PROCESSORS: Fixes a
graphic corruption bug on AMD processors.
- VOODOO RUSH PERFORMANCE: Dramatically improves 3D hardware
performance on accelerator cards using the Voodoo Rush
chipset.
I) SETTING UP THE X-WING VS. TIE FIGHTER 3D UPGRADE
To install the X-WING vs. TIE FIGHTER 3D Upgrade, you must
have the original version of the game already installed on your
system. Run the XvT_3D.exe program by double-clicking its icon.
The install program will automatically locate X-Wing vs. TIE
Fighter on your machine and replace a few of the game files.
Once installation is complete, the Change 3D Video Card
window of the X-WING vs. TIE FIGHTER launcher will pop up
automatically. You will need to choose the 3D driver settings
appropriate to your 3D card. From the pull down menu, choose the
Primary Display Driver (if you have a 2D/3D combo card), or the
3D driver (if you have a 3D pass-through card), then click
Accept. If you don't see the appropriate driver, you probably
need to reinstall DirectX on your machine. If at any time you
need to change this setting you may do so by clicking on the
Advanced Options button of the X-WING vs. TIE FIGHTER launcher.
Once you've set up your 3D card, click on Play X-WING vs. TIE
FIGHTER to launch the game as you would normally. You can check
your 3D settings in the game from the Config screen under Single
and Multiplayer Flight Engine Options. Note that the Specular
Highlights setting is grayed out; this setting is not applicable
to the 3D Upgrade version.
II) GENERAL INFORMATION
- MULTIPLAYER VERSION COMPATIBILITY
Installing the 3D Upgrade automatically installs the X-WING
vs. TIE FIGHTER 1.10 upgrade. For multiplayer games this
version is NOT compatible with version 1.00. All players must
be running the same version 1.1.4.
- DIRECTX 5.0
We recommend that you download and install Microsoft's DirectX
5.0. We have found that the game generally performs better
under DirectX 5.0; installing it will also ensure that you
have the most up-to-date Direct3D drivers. You can download
DirectX 5.0 from: http://www.microsoft.com
- DISABLING 3D HARDWARE
If for any reason you decide to disable 3D hardware
acceleration, you may do so from within the game's Config
screen, but be sure to change the 3D driver setting back to
PRIMARY DISPLAY DRIVER in the launcher's Advanced Settings
menu as well. If you do not change the 3D setting in the
launcher, colors may be displayed incorrectly while in flight
on some systems.
- TEXTURE MISPLACEMENT
Some 3D drivers have been found to cause textures to be
misplaced while in flight (for example, a texture that is
actually part of an explosion may be drawn on a ship). This
problem occurs very infrequently, but if you do experience
it, a quick fix is to change cockpit views by hitting the
period [.] key.
- GAME CONTROLLER DEVICE NUMBER, DIRECTX 5.0 ONLY
DirectX 5 allows you to install multiple devices in the
joystick control panel. If you install more than one device,
make sure the joystick you want to use for X-WING vs. TIE
FIGHTER is set up as the FIRST DEVICE. To check this
setting, go to the Windows 95 control panel, double-click on
Game Controllers, then click on the Advanced tab in the Game
Controllers window. Your joystick should be listed next to
Controller ID 1. X-WING vs. TIE FIGHTER will respond only to
that device.
- TASKING OUT OF AN INTERNET GAME, DIRECTX 3.0
ONLY
We recommend that you do not task out of an Internet game
under DirectX 3.0; doing so may cause the game to crash.
This problem does not occur under DirectX 5.0.

Note: The X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter 3Dfx Upgrade
has been tested extensively on cards with the 3Dfx Voodoo and
Voodoo Rush chipsets. Other 3D chipsets have not been fully
tested, however, so we cannot guarantee their compatibility, nor
will LucasArts provide technical support for 3D cards which do not
have the 3Dfx Voodoo or Voodoo Rush chipsets.

X-WING
vs. TIE FIGHTER Upgrade Version 1.1.0
(Included in the v1.1.4 Update)
1) IMPROVED INTERNET PLAY
a) Starfield warping greatly reduced
With average to poor internet connections, a player often
experiences "herky-jerky" movements of all the
objects on the screen. This is caused by the Internet
"dropping" or losing vital game information. The
occurrence of this phenomenon has been greatly reduced.
b) Player booting reduced and better connection stability
Much improvement has been made in preventing the
"booting" of players because of poor line quality.
In general, the effects of average to poor line quality is
less catastrophic.
c) Dropped connection time-out problems greatly reduced
When a player's Internet connection was lost, or because
their system had stopped responding, other players in an
Internet game would often take up to 2
or more minutes to recognize that this player was no longer
active. This situation has been mostly rectified.
d) Debriefing shows if a player has left the game in the
middle
The debrieing now displays a player's name in gray if for
any reason he is no longer in the game session.
e) Occurrences of Host/Server slowdown minimized
Occasionally on connections of poor quality, the host would
experience "freezes" or long slow downs. The
severity of these situations has been greatly reduced.
2) MELEE START LOCATIONS RANDOMIZED
To prevent players from "hanging out" or
"camping" at the entry points of other players during
a melee, player start locations have been randomized.
3) JUMPING INTO CRAFT OF A NEW WAVE
The new wave of a player's flight group no longer arrives
early. This reduces scoring anomalies and reduces the likelihood
that a player will jump into a craft that is already heavily
damaged.
4) CD DETECTION METHOD CHANGED
Conflicts between X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter's CD detection and
CD audio players like FlexiCD or other Multimedia CD Audio
players has been removed. The game will now let you play if you
have one of these programs but CD Audio will not work in X-Wing
vs. TIE Fighter unless you close or disable these programs.
Also, the problem with secondary CD-Rom drives and CD
Changers has been resolved due to this new CD detection method.
If you have more than one CD-Rom drive or are using a CD
Changer, the game would not detect the CD if it wasn't in the
first CD-Rom Drive or CD Changer slot. This problem has been
resolved. However, due to the way Windows 95 handles CD Audio,
you will not be able to hear music unless you play from the
primary or first CD-Rom drive.
Notes: The 1.1.4 Update includes all
fixes andenhancements from previous updates (v1.0, v1.10, and 3Dfx).
