President’s
Report 2008 -2009
Vote
of Thanks:
First
of all on behalf of the committee I would like to thank the
Auckland City Council and
the
Perry Foundation for
providing us with financial assistance to take the club through
another year without which we would have struggled to continue our
main activity, namely badminton, in a charitable fashion as in the
past. The members not only did not have to cover the full costs but
were also provided with free shuttlecocks and coaching for the junior
children. The details of the grants are as follows:
- Auckland
City Council:
Grant - $3460; purpose – Badminton Court Hire
- Perry
Foundation:
Grant - $1067; purpose - shuttlecocks
- Perry
Foundation:
Grant - $1422; purpose - coaching.
The
club also encouraged the members to take part in the ABA interclub
competition by providing assistance towards the tournament fees. ATSC
is proud of the following achievements of the members:
- Won
the B grade Singles in 2008 ABA interclub
- This
year we have fielded 2 teams for ABA interclub, A grade
singles(2 men 2 women) and B grade men’s(3 men)
- ATSC
members participated in the Indian Open tournament last month and
won many titles.
Iynka Loganathan:
Winner Open Singles, Winner Open men’s
Dev Senthiya:
Winner Open doubles, Winner Senior Men’s doubles.
Jayana Devathasan:
Winner Open women doubles, Singles runner up
Rowena Devathasan:
Winner Open women doubles
·
Representing
Auckland for 2008, 2009 : Dev, Jayana, Rowena (Devathasans) and Andrew
Thushianthan
Secondly
I would like to thank the following donors who provided some
assistance to the cricketers in subsidising their tournament fees:
- Mahadeva
family - $100
- Victor
Ragupathy - $50
- Param
Jegatheeson – $100
- Premkumar
Soundranayagam - $50
We
would like to remember Mr. Mahadeva who passed away last year. He was
a keen sports enthusiast and never missed an ATSC meeting since he was
in Auckland.
I
would also like to thank Umashanker Mahasivam for his determined
efforts to go through the cricket season (with Ellerslie cricket)
against all odds by providing his own time and money.
A
vote of thanks also goes to the secretary Gunalan Sivachelvan, Kumaran
Mangalakumar, Dev Senthiya, Shamina Sivashanmuganathan and Iynka
Loganathan.
Congratulations
to Gunalan and his wife (Aruna) on their marriage and we wish them all
the best. Gunalan was the
force behind applying for funds, persevering successfully in obtaining
the Charitable Organisation status for ATSC and was always there as a
right hand for the President in spite of being under pressure for
time.
Kumaran
provided his advice on financial matters and helped me in preparing
the financial reports. It was disappointing that many members I
approached to take up the position as treasurer declined to do so.
Kumaran’s assistance was very valuable under this circumstance.
Dev
Senthiya looked after our web site management and also coached the
children along with Iynka Loganathan with badminton skills at a
subsidised rate; I could clearly note the improvement in the skills of
those children who participated with commitment.
Finally
I would like to thank Shamina Sivashanmuganathan for her contributions
towards organising and running the club to a point where we the
committee is satisfied that a bright and new committee is going to
take over from us.
Charitable
Organisation Status:
Although
we had been running the club as a non-profit organisation since the
inception we learnt that it was not sufficient to qualify as a
Charitable Organisation and hence qualify to be exempt from tax
returns. Therefore we had to go through constitutional changes that
were necessary and finally got admitted as a Charitable Organisation.
All
members and future committees are required to study these changes and
act accordingly.
Many
activities of the club can be enhanced by this status. For example
College Rifles had prohibited ATSC using their venues for playing
netball etc without affiliation fees that can cost significant amount
of money. Funding organisations such as Lion Foundation requires that
ATSC is a Charitable Organisation. Therefore a plausible route is for
ATSC is to form affiliations within the Tamil community for the
various sports (soccer, netball, cricket etc) and promote those
affiliations with funding from funding organisations; individually
those affiliations will not be able to satisfy the requirements of the
funding organisations.
Membership:
There
had been no dramatic change in the membership number. We had 15 family
memberships and 36 single memberships. However the number of junior
children attending the club days has increased. The youngsters are
generally keen while the decline in senior membership has bottomed
out.
During
the somewhat distant past the club enjoyed significant membership with
parents and children at intermediate / high school level having a
heavy influence. Lot of those children are no longer there due to
pressure for time after leaving school at University, new employment
etc. The next generation of such parents and children have not yet
replaced them.
Another
apparent reason for the membership not picking up is due to the
ex-members choosing to form mini groups and choosing their own
convenient times to play socially without realising the value of being
competitive.
In
either case organising more competitions and coaching will motive them
take part in more sporting activities. This
requires financial and people resources and I hope that there will be
continued and increased support from the funding organisations.
I
wish the incoming committee success in funding applications and
membership drive.
Activities:
Apart
from the badminton club days every Sundays and limited involvement in
cricket no other sporting activities took place. With the help of
Perry Foundation funds, we are poised to get the benefit of feather
shuttles instead of plastic shuttles which we had been doing in the
past and hope that assistance will continue.
Auckland
/ Wellington Encounter was going to take place in Wellington on the 27th
of March 2009. As a mark of respect for the Tamils seriously suffering
in Sri Lanka caught up in the civil war the event was called off by
consensus between Wellington and Auckland.
I
request a 1 minute silence for those innocent civilians who died and
those who are continuing to suffer.
The
juniors of the community were coached badminton free of charge with the help of the
grants received from Perry
Foundation and court hire from Auckland
City Council.
It
has to be admitted that apart from the above activities the club was
on a holding mode due to lack of resources mainly financial; it is a
catch 22 situation and if we can get extra funds from funding
organisations the lack of resources can be compensated by hiring some
assistance and that will boost personnel participation and resources.
In
conclusion I again wish the incoming committee all the best.
